India has improved its position in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024, ranking 39th out of 133 economies, up from 40th last year. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the country's thriving innovation landscape, driven by a dynamic start-up ecosystem and strong contributions from research organizations. India leads the lower-middle-income group in innovation for the 14th consecutive year, excelling in indicators like ICT services exports and venture capital. The GII also noted that India ranks 8th globally for unicorn companies, while Switzerland and Sweden topped the index.
